Hanoi celebrates the 1,000th anniversary since its founding, next week. From Oct. 1-10, there will be festivals and events designed to showcase the city’s heritage.
Last month, UNESCO registered the central sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long – Hanoi as the Vietnam’s sixth World Heritage Site. According to UNESCO.org, “The Imperial Citadel buildings and the remains in the 18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site reflect a unique South-East Asian culture specific to the lower Red River Valley, at the crossroads between influences coming from China in the north and the ancient Kingdom of Champa in the south.” This country has had many masters, long before the U.S. became involved in the Vietnam conflict.
Vietnam is an increasingly popular destination for Americans. The flood of tourists is a mix of travelers who’ve heard so much about this exotic country, people who want to join the growing number of bicycle trips that showcase the rural areas, and former soldiers who fought here during the conflict and want to see how the country has changed. source: www.about.com/travel/
